My high school offered a veterinary practicum program, for students in the program to achiever their Certified Veterinary Assistant Level 1 certification. Through this practicum, I was placed at Austin Veterinary Diagnostic Hospital. My internship was for four hours a day, Monday, Wednesday, and every other Friday. Over the course of the school year, my internship ended at 325 hours of hands on veterinary experience under the AVDH team. Dr. Varga, Dr. Kneupper, and Dr. Donop as well as all the technicians and staff at AVDH took the time to teach me the skills I needed to master in order to complete my CVA 1 skills checklist and exam. From analyzing fecal floats, to sterilizing veterinary tools and equipment, to restraining animals, to performing laboratory tests and more, over my time at AVDH I became more and more immersed in the veterinary industry and responsible for veterinary assistant tasks. I attached my daily journal below so that you can see my growth over my time at the hospital. By interning at a diagnostic hospital, I was exposed to various laboratory tests, onsite diagnostics, and a variety of soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries and recoveries. In the end through this internship I now know that veterinary medicine is the career for me, and I am now a certified veterinary assistant as well.
