Scientific Research and Design - a partnership class with the Freshman Research Institute at the University of Texas at Austin in which I was able to do research in both my high school's lab and UT labs to help in "Creating myc tagged mutants of RBM10 to study changes in cellular localization and interactions" and present at the university's Undergraduate Research Symposium.
While I had to hand over my research journal to UT at the end of May, I made significant progress on this project and learned many skills in a lab such as how to extract and purify DNA from E. coli cultures in a mini prep, how to perform various PCR protocols, how to determine the concentration of DNA in a sample using a nanodrop, how to run gel electrophoresis and cut out bands from the gel to purify and extract DNA from them, and so much more.

The Biomedical Research Certificate, offered by the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, will provide students the opportunity to gain advanced training in biomedical research. Students in the Certificate Program will gain a broader understanding of the creation, evaluation, and dissemination of new knowledge while performing publishable original biomedical research within a research-intensive community. The Biomedical Research Certificate Program requires a minimum of 18-credit hours in designated courses, each of which includes engagement in inquiry-based research.
Through the Biomedical Sciences Research Certificate Program I have spent sophomore year learning basic overviews of bioinformatics programs like Galaxy, David, and MATLAB, I have learned about work done in the growing Bioinformatics field and how it can be applied to various research projects. Junior year I worked within the epidemiology Hamer Lab at Texas A&M University as a student worker. I hope to learn more about the role of insects in spreading deadly diseases, the way we can approach these diseases from a OneHealth standpoint, and how we can work together as scientists from various backgrounds to stop these diseases in their tracks. Senior year, I participated in a practicum class in Biomedical Research to complete my certificate. By working with other students who have trained over the past 4 years in various disciplines, I hope to gain a new outlook on working in a diverse team to complete a solid, project and complete an undergraduate thesis. |
